2020 Ram 1500 Welcomes EcoDiesel V6 With Highest Torque In the Segment

In addition to 480 pound-feet of torque, the EcoDiesel V6 in the 2020 Ram 1500 is capable of towing a segment-leading 12,560 pounds. As opposed to the previous generation of the half-ton truck, even the Rebel is available with the six-cylinder turbo diesel.

Maximum torque is developed at 1,600 rpm, peaking 400 rpm earlier than the preceding version. Horsepower also increased to 260 horsepower, coming on strong at 3,600 revolutions per minute. The 2,000-bar fuel injector nozzles are joined by an EGR system with a dual loop and a water-cooled turbocharger with variable geometry.

Even the compression ratio is different, now rated at 16.5:1 as opposed to 16.0:1 before. A dual vacuum pump and two-piece oil sump are also worthy of highlighting, in addition to offsetting the piston pin by 0.3 millimeters from the centerline to minimize mechanical noises. In other words, the NVH is also better than ever.

“The new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is America’s most powerful half-ton diesel pickup, following up on Ram’s HD torque leadership and achieving what no other manufacturer has, with up to 480 lb-ft of torque in a 3.0-liter engine,” declared Reid Bigland, head honcho of the brand. “The all-new EcoDiesel engine and our eTorque mild-hybrid powertrain technologies deliver the highest available fuel efficiency for our Ram 1500 customers.”

What’s most surprising about the DOHC turbo diesel V6 is the starting price of $36,890 excluding $1,695 for the destination charge. At that level, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is cheaper than the Ford F-150 Power Stroke and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Duramax. It should be mentioned, however, that the most affordable Ram 1500 with this engine is the Tradesman Quad Cab with rear-wheel drive.

The base price for the F-150 Power Stroke is $44,540 while the Silverado 1500 Duramax starts at $45,775. Maximum towing capacities for the two competitors are 11,400 and 9,300 pounds, respectively. Ram hasn’t released the fuel economy numbers at the time of writing, but all told, the EcoDiesel is an interesting option at $3,000 over the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with eTorque mild hybridization.
