This Sunday, the streets of New York City hosted the last race in this year’s Formula E championship. And what better place for Porsche to show off the upcoming Taycan electric car than in this setting?
Wearing the American flag painted on its roof, the Taycan went a few times around the course created for the Formula E race in Brooklyn, driven by Porsche works driver Neel Jani. The New York apparition is the last in a series of three that saw the car go from China to the UK and then to New York.

Each time it visited a country, the roof of the Taycan was painted to match their national flag.

“In Formula E, recuperation plays an important part in the race strategy. In a production car, intelligent energy recovery can make it possible to achieve significant benefits in terms of range,” said in a statement Neel Jani.

“I was surprised by the long range of the new Taycan even when driven spiritedly round a race track. That is due to its performance-oriented battery and the sophisticated energy management system.”

The electric Taycan in production form will be shown publicly for the first time in September and will go on sale by the end of the year. It marks the entry of the German carmaker into a segment it so far tested with a range of various hybrids.

The Taycan is powered by an electric drivetrain that gives it a range of 500 km (311 miles) on a single charge, making it one of the most potent cars on the market.

As for performances, the two permanently synchronous motors, inspired by the ones used in the  919 Hybrid race, give the Taycan a top speed of over 250 kph (155 mph) and a 0-100 kph (62 mph) acceleration time of under 3.5 seconds.

There’s no word on pricing yet, but Porsche says some 20,000 people have already signed up for one.
