The age-old jokes about Porsche 911 designers being the laziest in the business might be getting a bit too old - check out the styling cues of the upcoming 992 prototype and you'll notice the refinement in the subtleness of the changes. And while we have previously come across a nearly naked prototype in Blue, this time it's a Red car that showcases the design of the 2020 Neunelfer.
The slightly more rounded design slightly reminds us of the 993 generation, while the massive active rear wing appears to be a nod to the 959. Then again, with its sleek light clusters (for instance, the full-width taillights bring the Neunelfer in line with the Cayenne, the Panamera and the Macan).

Up front, the slim turn signals are integrated into the air intake surrounds. The central air intake is heftier, while the (probably) active side intakes give us mixed emotions, at least judging by this images. The frunk lid is also new, with this packing a pair of creases.

The pair of prototypes we have here come in Carrera or Carrera S trim, which means there are no intakes on the rear wings or a widebody. Speaking of the profile, the door handles almost come with a flush design, while the door mirrors look more refined.

The air vents on the side of the rear apron are extrovert, while the license plate now sits in between the exhaust tips.

Engine-wise, the 991.2 generation market the introduction of 3.0-liter turbocharged engines, so we're not expecting important changes for the new generation. We're expecting the base Carrera to jump to 390 hp, while the Carrera S should deliver 450 hp.

As for the cabin, other prototypes have allowed us to notice the partially digital dash - the traditional center-mounted tacho will be flanked by a pair of screens, so we won't get an all-digital dash like the one seen on a Taycan prototype.

Porsche has already confirmed the hybridization of the 992, but we're not sure whether this will offer a Carrera 4 E-Hybrid and a Turbo S E-Hybrid like the Cayenne and the Panamera.

Until the Zuffenhausen machine makes its debut this fall (expect it in Paris), here's a 992 Turbo tester and a 2020 911 GT3 prototype.
