2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S Drag Races Mercedes-AMG GT 63, Results Are Surprising

You can keep your predictable drag races where all the cars are priced the same and belong to a specific class. We want realistic stuff, like driving up to the lights in your brand new Porsche 911 and having your ego bruised by a Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S.

These two are obviously miss-matched. The 911 is a rear-engined 2+2 sports car with a 3-liter while the AMG has two more doors and cylinders. But despite the difference in displacement, we wanted to believe that the Carrera S was going to be much faster.

Every Porsche model is deceptively fast, capable of taking on models with a lot more power. Meanwhile, we see the GT 63 S as this dressed up E63 for people who want to spend more money without going faster.

But maybe we should check out the specs first. The 992 version of the Carrera S is rated at 450 horsepower and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque, going to the rear wheels via a PDK. It's supposed to hit 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds (60mph in 3.5) and maxes out at 308 km/h (191 mph).

Meanwhile, the top-end AMG GT 4-door gets 639 horsepower and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque from its V8. And while people don't show it the proper respect, she will still do 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds (3.0 seconds to 60mph) and its top speed is higher too: 315 km/h or 196 mph.

This short but sweet drag race from South Africa matches our new expectations. It shows the GT 63 S pulling away with ease and staying ahead. By extension, this means most potent V8 German saloons (E63, Panamera Turbo, M5, RS7) will also be faster than a 911 Carrera S.

We wanted to cut it a little slack, but this is a €120,000 Porsche sports car here, not some Audi TT. You might as well wait for the Turbo if drag racing is your thing.
