2020 Porsche 911 Cabriolet Shows New Roof, GT3 Cabriolet Considered

Now that the 2020 Porsche 911 is among us, we can look forward to the rest of the derivatives (after all, the Neunelfer family will pack north of twenty versions). And the time has come to talk about the 992 Cabriolet.

The open-top version of the newcomer is currently in its final testing stage, with this set to make its debut in the coming months.

And since the Coupe has revealed all the styling secrets of the new generation, the only new bits visible here come in the form of the cloth roof and the tonneau, which obviously haven't changed too much compared to the outgoing 991.2.

The first half of next year will also see Porsche introducing the base Carrera models (only the S and the 4S were introduced last month in Los Angeles), with these obviously also set to be thrown into the Cabrio mix.

We've already seen Zuffenhausen engineers testing the 992 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, which could debut in the second half of next year or by summer 2020.

Nevertheless, we might also receive a 911 GT3 Cabrio this time around. A recent presentation Porsche made for the 992 showed that the new MMB modular mid-engined platform underpinning the new Neunelfer is ready to welcome a "GTx" Cabriolet, among others (the platform will also be used for the next-gen 718 mid-engine sportscars).

Sure, the GTS Cabriolet already exists, but we might just see Porsche offering the said GT3 Cabrio. And there's one sting clue towards this scenario.

We're referring to the upcoming 991.2 Speedster, a swansong that's basically an uber-limited GT3 Cabriolet, as prototypes have shown - here are some spyshots for you.

So here's to hoping the extra torsional rigidity of the new chassis means an open-top model can fit the requirements of the GT Division. And if we factor in the naturally aspirated 992 GT3 test cars that have been spied, the future looks overly tempting.
