You guys can't seem to get enough of the new Peugeot 208, so we decided to share some photos from the same scenic Parc de Saint-Cloud near Paris where it was compared to the Audi A1 and Renault Clio in the past few days. This time, it's facing off against the previous generation of the 208.
Peugeot has been making small hatchbacks just as long as Volkswagen or Ford. The 208 came out in 2012 as a replacement for the 207. Unlike most of its rivals, it became smaller, more urban, while also adopting a premium identity.
These photos come from feline.cc, which is a super-club of Peugeot fans. Hopefully, they don't mind us sharing the footage so many supermini buyers will be looking for.
In many ways, the latest generation is a continuation of that, focusing on extroverted design. The interior is also a continuation of the i-Cockpit philosophy, though it's much better executed. This is like being inside the award-winning 3008, with piano keys and huge screens everywhere. But let's look at the dimensions first.
According to the French manufacturer, the 208 II is 9cm longer than its predecessor (4.06m versus 3.97m). It's also 3cm lower, though the width and wheelbase are about the same. And underneath the new model, you'll find the same Compact Modular Platform that also underpins the Opel Corsa, new 2008 crossover and the DS3 Crossback.
We didn't think there was anything wrong with the old generation, but the 208 II is clearly the sportier choice, especially with the blacked out GT Line package and those striking LED claws or... fangs? Whatever; it's an angry yellow cat.
We will, however, miss the availability of a 3-door body that echoes the classic 205 GTi and more powerful engines. In 2014, the GTi Performance maxed out with a 208 horsepower version of the 1.6 THP turbo engine. Peugeot is never going to have stuff like that again. The current range offers two 100 horsepower units and a 136 HP pure-electric model.
