The most significant change when it comes to Nissan Titan’s 2020 interpretation is not something the car has, but rather something it lacks. And that is the Cummins V8 turbo diesel engine that formed the backbone of the Titan lineup for years.
For the new version, as announced ever since the truck’s unveiling at the 2019 State Fair of Texas, Nissan is betting on a powerplant it calls Endurance. That is a 5.6-liter V8, reworked into developing 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque.
The same engine, allegedly the most powerful standard V8 in its class, powers the XD variant unveiled this week as well, paired to the same 9-speed automatic transmission (which replaces the previous 7-speed one).
The main difference is that the powertrain needs to power along a car that is riding on a 151.6-inch wheelbase, 15 inches longer than regular Titan. This simple increase in size allows for the size of the bed to reach 6.5 feet.
All the changes made for the new Titan lineup go into the XD as well. That includes the 7.0-inch programmable driver information display, accompanied by a 9-inch touchscreen as the main infotainment interface.
A special gauge is used to display tire angle, relative pitch and roll angles by using not a gyroscope, but accelerometer data. This allows it to be more accurate at higher speeds.
Just as its smaller sibling, the XD is protected by the Nissan Safety Shield 360, a suite of systems that comprises automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, lane departure warning, and high beam assist.
Rear automatic braking is also available, making the Titan the only truck in its class to have it.
The biggest of the Titans will be offered by Nissan only in crew cab configuration and four-wheel-drive. Five grade levels are available, namely S, SV, PRO-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve.
