The Nissan Patrol or Armada is one of the few SUVs sold today that feels like it could be driven off the dealer lot and into an Amazonian jungle or African humanitarian mission. However, Lexus LX or Toyota Land Cruiser, it can still be updated to look modern.
The current generation entered production in early 2010, came to America that year as the Infiniti QX56 and was later redesigned into the QX80 (in 2016). So even though North America sees the Armada as a 2017-and-later nameplate, it's actually pretty old.

The 2020 model was recently spied during a photoshoot, suggesting its debut is quite close. However, you won't have to put up with either the grainy photos or the wait, since Russian website Kolesa has produced some accurate renderings.

These show that the current generation will donate its general proportions and even a few body panels. It's common for this to happen with rugged Japanse machines like this, which are sold in relatively low volumes and are prised for their reliability and off-road prowess.

At the front, the biggest change is witnessed by the headlights, which are U-shaped and flank a simple chrome grille. In fact, both this and the lower air intakes are also U-shaped.

Around the back, we see taillights which sit in the same place but are connected by a large strip of chrome for that premium feel. Ironically, it looks a lot like the Infiniti EX80 Monograph concept from the rear 3/4 view.

Engine options should be quite similar, meaning a 5.6-liter V8 will make up the bulk of the range, perhaps making a little more than the current 390 hp (395 PS) and 394 lb-ft (534 Nm) of torque. There's also the Nismo version for the Middle East, which gets about 30 more HP and a throaty exhaust.

Other markets should also enjoy a 4-liter V8 producing 275 hp and 291 lb-ft (394 Nm) of torque. The Patrol is popular enough in Russia that the country makes its own version in Saint-Petersburg. However, for the really crazy stuff, you'll have to go to the Arab world, where they stick big turbochargers to get a couple of thousand horsepower and race them up sand dunes.
