2020 Nissan Pathfinder Priced At $31,680

Known as the R52, the fourth generation of the Pathfinder is among us since 2012 for the 2013 model year. Joined at the hip with the Infiniti QX60 mid-size luxury crossover, the Nissan continues to sell rather well in the United States despite the old underpinnings.

Model year 2020 doesn’t bring too much of a newity except for the starting price, namely $31,680 excluding $1,045 for the destination charge. That kind of money gets you seating for seven and two-wheel drive for the S trim level, and customers who need four-wheel drive can get it as long as they’re prepared to pony up an additional $1,690.

At the other end of the spectrum, you’re looking at $44,610 without freight for the Platinum 4WD. All grades are equipped with a direct-injection V6 displacing 3.5 liters, a naturally aspirated engine with 284 horsepower on tap and best-in-class towing capacity.

When properly equipped, the Pathfinder is rated at 6,000 pounds (2,721 kilograms). That’s enough for towing two-axle recreational trailers, which is more than enough for a vehicle of this size. A wide range of technologies and convenience features are offered for 2020, including the Rock Creek Edition package we’ve detailed in a previous story.

And now, for the bad part. Like most Nissans out there in the U.S. of America, the 2020 Pathfinder continues to rely on the Xtronic transmission. Consumer complaints include jerking, slipping, loss of power, and the CVT error message being displayed. Some owners have been treated to a powertrain warranty extension to 10 years or 120,000 miles, but JATCO has yet to redesign these things to be a bit more reliable.

On the upside, there’s a lot to like about the seats in the Pathfinder and the so-called EZ Flex Seating System with Latch and Glide. If you’re feeling spendful, Nissan is also willing to treat the mid-size crossover to Intelligent Around View Monitor, 13 speakers from Bose, a dual panoramic moonroof, motion-activated liftgate, and NissanConnect with sat-nav and services.
