A couple of years ago, British carmaker MG Motor launched its second SUV, the ZS. Reviving an older name that until that time belonged to a sports family car, the new ZS has enjoyed its share of success on the British market. And now it helps the carmaker take its first step into the world of electric cars.
On Wednesday (July 17) the Brits announced the ZS SUV is getting an electric variant, one that is the “first truly affordable, family-friendly electric car.”

The SUV has been modified to accommodate a 44.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack and one front-mounted electric motor instead of the usual powertrain. The battery can hold enough electricity to ensure a range of 163 miles (262 km), more than enough if you don't plan to leave the city limits by much.

On its part, the electric motor delivers 143 ps and 353 Nm of torque.

Otherwise, the vehicle comes with all the complement of features usually deployed on the ZS line. That includes the MG Pilot driver assistance suite of technologies that contains emergency braking, blindspot monitoring, lane assist and adaptive cruise control, among other things.

At the interior, MG fitted an 8-inch touchscreen that is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible, but also audio streaming and DAB radio.

Visually, the ZS EV sets itself apart from the rest of the range by hiding a CCS charging port in the front grille, and by the use of new 17-inch alloy wheels.

The car is priced from £21,495, but only if you manage to be among the first 1,000 people to purchase one. There’s no word on what happens if you’re not.

"ZS EV is here to revolutionise the way people think about electric cars. With the first truly affordable, family friendly electric car, MG is bringing zero-emissions motoring within everyone’s reach," said in a statement Daniel Gregorious, MG head of sales.

"Make no mistake, this car isn’t a brand statement or a vanity project, we’re here to sell electric cars and to sell big!”

MG says deliveries of the new MG ZS EV SUV begin in September.
