Revealed in April 2019 at the New York International Auto Show, the GLS went on sale in Europe towards the end of that month. The United States followed at the beginning of June 2019, and the GLS 450 4Matic starts the lineup with a price tag of $75,200 excluding the $995 destination charge.
Taking inspiration from the GLE, the full-size SUV is now available as the GLS 580 4Matic. What that means is $97,800 before taxes, an upgrade from six to eight cylinders, and EQ Boost 48-volt electrical assistance. The mild-hybrid system delivers 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque in short bursts while the engine is rated at 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque from 4.0 liters of displacement and a twin-turbo setup.
As expected, the engine is hooked up to a nine-speed transmission. Seven-tenths quicker to 60 miles per hour than the GLS 450 4Matic, the V8 option is limited to 130 miles per hour. For some reason or another, the GLS 580 4Matic also happens to be 0.2 inches longer than the entry-level model.
Two more versions are scheduled to premiere no later than 2020, and those are the 63 and 63 S. With the help of Affalterbach, these models could cross the 600-horsepower mark with ease. The GT 4-Door Coupe in 63 S 4Matic+ flavor is the most powerful car that Mercedes-AMG sells these days, a five-door liftback sedan with 630 ponies on tap.
Codenamed X167, the third generation of the GLS is “the S-Class of SUVs” according to Mercedes-Benz. “It embodies luxury, confidence, and intelligence like almost no other vehicle," said Daimler AG board member Ola Källenius.
Produced in Tuscaloosa, the GLS competes against the likes of the BMW X7 instead of the Range Rover. Both Germans are too on-road focused to take on the British establishment off the beaten track, and neither has the heritage of the Range Rover. Speaking of which, can you imagine the Queen of the United Kingdom riding in a GLS or X7?
