The cheapest model is the GLE 350 which starts from $53,700. In return, Mercedes gives you a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo with 255-hp and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. It's only natural to think of a couple of rivals. The obvious one is going to be Volvo since the company has a lineup made up almost exclusively of 2.0-liter units. The XC90 T5 with FWD starts from a much more reasonable $47,700 and it gives you 250-hp. We'll get to BMW a little later.

Adding AWD to the GLE 350 means the price goes up to $56,200. For now, the range-topper will be the 450, which uses a brand new 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbo unit with EQ Boost and a maximum of 362-hp plus 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.

Meanwhile, a BMW X5 xDrive40i, which is an equally new and some might argue better-looking SUV, starts at $60,700. The Bimmer also offers an xDrive50i for $75,750. Many people say it's not worth ordering an expensive German luxury SUV if it doesn't have a V8 engine. And at the moment, it's looking like the GLE 550 is gone for good.

No matter which model you go for, the GLE comes standard with the 9-speed automatic. Also, the dual 12.3-inch MBUX screens are installed, along with navigation, LED headlights and active safety systems. Of course, they are going to kill you with the options as well.

Because it has a 48-volt electric system powering it, the GLE 450 also gives you access to optional E-Active Body Control, which has never been available in the Mercedes SUV before. The system can iron out the bumps by reading the road ahead and adjusting accordingly or even rock the vehicle free from a sand trap.
