2020 Mercedes-Benz E 350 To Replace E 300 In the United States

At $53,500 excluding destination charge, the E 300 sedan isn’t a cheap car. 4Matic all-wheel drive balloons the pricing to $56,000, and even at that price point, you’re treated to a four-cylinder turbo with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.

On the upside, the 9G-Tronic shifts like a charm and peak torque is available from 1,300 to 4,000 rpm. For the 2020 model year, Mercedes-Benz prepares to switch to the E 350 as the entry-level model, translating to an increase of 14 horsepower. But there’s a catch that must be highlighted…

No upgrade comes free, and Car & Driver understands that pricing rises $550 compared to the 2019 model year. “4Matic all-wheel drive remains a $2,500 optional extra” according to the cited publication, and yes, the engine is shared with the C-Class sedan, GLC-Class compact crossover, and GLE-Class mid-size SUV.

The V6-engined E 450 soldiers on despite the fact Mercedes-Benz developed an inline-six turbo as a replacement. This engine is available in the E 53, but being an AMG, the pricing reflects the Affalterbach know-how. Thanks to EQ Boost and the electric auxiliary compressor, the M 256 engine develops 435 PS and 520 Nm (429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet) from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm.

As far as sales are concerned, the W213 has seen better days in the United States of America. The three-pointed star sold 45,481 examples of the breed in 2018, down from 49,473 in 2016. BMW managed to increase the sales of the 5 Series to 43,937, but that’s not enough to take Mercedes-Benz’s place in this segment.

W213 is the codename for the fifth generation of the E-Class, twinned with the S213 station wagon, C238 coupe, and A238 cabriolet. Production started in February 2016 for the 2017 model year, and Mercedes-Benz prepares for the mid-cycle refresh in 2020.

As expected, the facelift will borrow styling cues from the CLS-Class and GT 4-Door Coupe. The latter actually happens to be a five-door liftback sedan, but then again, Mercedes-Benz works in mysterious ways.
