Mercedes-AMG's GT3 race car is among the most popular choices with racing teams. Since the nameplate’s introduction in 2015, 130 of them were sold, placing the model at the top of the sales charts in its category. And now comes an even better proposition: the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT3.
This coming weekend, the 24-hour race at the Nurburgring takes place, and it is there where the Germans will be showing off with their latest creation. But before that, they released the full details on the car that is supposed to refresh the range.
In a few words, Mercedes-AMG says the new GT3 comes with new looks, a number of performance optimizations and, most important for a racing team, a reduction in running costs.
More specifically, the carmaker says it has expanded the running time of the 6.2-liter V8 engine so that rebuilds are not required quite as often as before. The introduction of better protection for the radiator also contributes to the cost reduction efforts.
For increased performance, the front splitter and rear wings can be adjusted quicker, saving time. A Drop Start function that automatically starts the engine as soon as the car is dropped from its jacks can also save precious seconds.
As a premiere in the racing world, the new GT3 features an automatic recording and analysis system for all vehicle components, clearing the way for faster and more direct replacement of affected parts.
Design-wise, the GT3 uses a new front apron, new flics, a new front diffusor and a new rear apron. And there’s also the color chosen to show the car in.
With all these new tweaks, the new GT3 car is priced at €399.000 ($452,000). Deliveries of the car begin later this year, just in time to allow it entry in competitions in 2020.
