One day after unveiling the second-generation GLE Coupe, Mercedes-Benz has taken upon itself to stir things up in the compact crossover segment by presenting the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4Matic.
As expected, the new GLB version is currently the only occupant of a niche that it solely created, at least until the rumored Audi S Q3 arrives.
That said, not even the S Q3 will have up to seven seats like the GLB 35, so the new Mercedes-AMG model is set to remain a unique proposition in this segment for quite some time.
Just like the Mercedes-AMG A 35, whose MFA2 platform it borrows, the new GLB 35 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that develops 306 horsepower and a healthy 400 Nm of torque.
Thanks to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission that sends power to all four wheels, the sporty compact crossover can go from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in just 5.2 seconds, onwards to a top speed that's been electronically limited to 250 kph (155 mph).
“With the new GLB 35 4MATIC we are extending our product portfolio by adding a highly attractive model for an active target group that attaches special importance to versatility. This also includes the optional seven-seater capability of our new compact SUV, though without having to sacrifice the genes typical of an AMG. Because in its segment, our GLB 35 likewise fulfills our brand promise of Driving Performance,” said Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG head honcho.
It is yet unclear if the GLB will also receive a more hardcore “45” version, but judging by recent spy videos, the “35” is likely to receive a big brother in about a year.
Unlike the A 35, the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 already come with the so-called “Panamericana grille,” but having “only” two rear exhaust tips instead of four is probably a good enough hint that a GLB 45 is also in the pipeline.
