It was 1997 when Mercedes-Benz made its entry on the compact car scene. And while the beginning was rather humble, the three-pointed star is now one of the dominant figures of the segment, shaping trends along the way. For instance, if we are to look at the performance side of the genre, the German automaker's compact platform leads the way in terms of spiciness: with the second-gen "45" models almost ready for their debut, this class is set to be taken to new heights.
For now, we'll focus on the 2020 Mercedes-AMG CLA 45. We've spied the sloping roof line hottie on multiple occasions, with the newcomer set to make its debut at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, which kicks off tomorrow, July 4th.

Now, you might want to peek throug that camo, in which case the automotive producer has prepared a teaser for you - check this out in the Facebook post below.

The company has also confirmed the output numbers of the duo - as it happens with all-out Mercedes-AMG models these days, there will be a standard car and an "S" model.

So while the first will allow the driver to play with 389 hp, the second is set to deliver 422 ponies.

Sure, the platform of the 2020 CLA 45 is still FWD-based. Nevertheless, the newcomer should borrow the Drift Mode promised for the new A45 (also debuting at Goodwood), so slip angle aficionados are expected to have their way.

While other "45" models, such as the A-Class, sadly won't make it to the US, the 2020 CLA 45 will. And if you're looking for (way more) cabin space, but still enjoy this platform, perhaps the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLB 45 is the choice for you.

Of course, the M-AMG GLB 35 will have to show up first. And with its introduction expected to take place by the end of the year, we should see the full-fat model landing in 2020, as a 2021 model.
