2019 has been a very busy year for both Mercedes-Benz and its AMG performance division. Between them, the two have released an average of two new cars per month since January, and it seems there’s no stopping the flow.
Soon after the introduction of the A 35 and CLA 35 in April, AMG follows up in July with the launch of the more powerful A 45 and CLA 45. Two cars sharing the same segment (compact) and the same engine (2.0-liter) but going after their own target customers.
Both the new cars revealed by AMG on Thursday (July 4) use the engine Mercedes likes to call “the world's most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine manufactured for series production”
On both cars, the 2.0-liter unit is paired to the same new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. It develops 387 hp and 480 Nm of torque for both the A 45 and CLA 45, while for their respective S variants the engine was tweaked into pumping out 421 hp and 500 Nm of torque.
All the usual AMG appointments have made it on this new breed of cars, with the performance division leaving its mark on every part of the two models, from the wheel arches to the double topstitching in red on the upholstery. A brand new all-wheel-drive system with a so-called "drift mode" is also fitted as standard on the A 45 S and CLA 45 S, or as an option on the standard versions.
AMG promises the changes made to the cars are significantly more extensive than the ones on the previous generation. As they should, as they are based on the new generations of the A-Class and CLA.
All the latest evolutions in terms of gadgetry, including the now omnipresent MBUX infotainment system - this time with AMG-specific display, have been included in this new release of the A 45 and CLA 45.
