The last major international auto show of the year will kick off at the end of the month in Los Angeles, and we already have confirmation of a satisfying number of models to be shown for the first time there.
The latest carmaker to announce a premiere at the Los Angeles Convention Center is Mazda, which on Thursday revealed the new generation Mazda3 will be on the floor of the event.
Judging by the teaser image released with the announcement it’s safe to say that both the sedan and hatchback versions of the model will be shown.
Design wise, both will adopt “a more mature interpretation of Kodo design that embodies the essence of Japanese aesthetics,” says Mazda. This mature looks will be complemented by the new performance levels made possible with the use of a new generation of Skyactiv engines.
With the presentation of the Mazda3, the Japanese will usher in their new generation of cars, as all subsequent models will likely be designed in a similar manner and use the new technologies.
The new generation of Skyactiv engines which will be used is called X, or more officially Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) Skyactiv-X. It will be one of the few gasoline engines in the world to use compression ignition.
Unlike a regular gasoline engine, in which the fuel-air mixture is ignited by a spark, Skyactiv-X will employ an approached used by diesel engines, which compress the fuel until it becomes so hot it ignites.
As a result, Mazda says the two-liter SKYACTIV-X will produce 30 percent more power than the current SKYACTIV-G of similar displacement.
It could also mean less CO2 released into the air, which led Mazda to conclude that it’s new engine will spit out less CO2 burning fossil fuel than the CO2 produced by turning coal or petroleum into electricity for electric vehicles.
