Great for off-road conversions and tight woodland tracks, the 90 series is making a comeback on the brand new 2020 Land Rover Defender. Here are the first spyshots of this hot new thing.
Following the first spyshots of the 2020 Defender, which came out only a couple of days ago, Land Rover began testing for its second body style. In this era of ever larger family cars, this is a refreshing breath of air.

Short enough to be compared to a toy, the 90 series is way better in off-road situations due to its break-over angle. This is the angle of an obstacle that you can drive over, and you won't get high-centered, basically stuck on something in the middle of the car.

That's why the wheelbase of the Defender 90 series is so short while most modern cars try to push their wheels to the extremities for better handling and on-road stability. Other than that, the short model is similar to the previously spied 110 model.

It's covered from head to toe in camouflage. However, it's worth pointing out that the full-size spare wheel is not present on that side-hinged rear door, likely meaning it's an option.

Despite the boxy and tall body, this is very much a modern SUV, and you can see this immediately by looking under the rear skirt. There, we spot a modern exhaust system and aluminum alloy suspension arms. Also, the 2020 Defender has LED lights, disk brakes, and parking sensors.

It's believed that the 4x4 will be underpinned by the new Modular Longitudinal Platform (MLA), which will underpin most Land Rovers by 2025. In contrast to the old model, this will have a variety of modern, efficient and refined engines of both the 4- and 6-cylinder variety. Not only will they be turbocharged, but also hybridized. Even a plug-in version is expected to come out, though a pure electric model can't be ruled out either.
