Even though Fiat Chrysler Automobiles hasn’t pulled the veil off the 2020 Jeep Gladiator, the mid-size pickup truck is already the subject of rendering artists. All Car News had a go at imagining the workhorse with no less than six wheels, oversized all-terrain tires, along with a bull bar, additional lighting, and a snorkel.
If there’s anyone willing to take up the challenge of converting the Gladiator into a six-wheeler, two companies come to mind. First of all, Kahn Design from the United Kingdom has experience in this regard. Then there’s Hennessey Performance Engineering, which has the F-150 Raptor-based VelociRaptor 6x6 and Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss-based Goliath 6x6.
Turning our attention to the real thing, Jeep will premiere the Gladiator at the end of the month in Los Angeles. November 28th is the date, and photographs of the mid-size pickup truck have already leaked onto the Internet together with details regarding the powertrain.
The Hurricane from the Wrangler won’t be offered because there’s no replacement for displacement. In its place, the Gladiator will be powered by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 as standard and 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 as an optional extra. The gasoline engine can be matched to a six-speed manual transmission whereas the turbo diesel comes from the get-go with the Torqueflite 850RE eight-speed automatic.
The Dana 44 axles are complemented by the sway-bar disconnect feature, locking differentials, 4:1 low-range transfer case, 84.1:1 crawl ratio, and 33-inch wheels. Jeep quotes 30 inches of water fording for the Gladiator Rubicon, which works out at 76.2 centimeters on the metric system.
It appears Jeep will offer the Gladiator exclusively as a crew cab with a 5-foot bed (1.5 meters). In its most capable configuration, the newcomer can tow up to 7,650 pounds whereas payload is rated at 1,600 pounds. Last, but certainly not least, expect “more than 80 available advanced safety and security features” along with “open-air freedom.”
