In this day and age, there are Hyundais, and there’s the Hyundai Veloster N. Part of the carmaker’s performance series, and the first N to be available in the U.S., the Veloster just got a tad tastier thanks to the release of a new transmission for it.
It’s been known for a while that a dual-clutch is coming to the range, and on Monday, April 20, the South Koreans confirmed it as the grin-inducing hardware some were waiting for. And apparently they do mean grin-inducing in the literal sense.
The 8-speed tranny has been designed in such a way as to “provide the engaging experience of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic transmission” says Hyundai, but what’s more important is that it will cut down acceleration times even further.
Usually rated at over 6 seconds from a standstill to 62 mph for the version equipped with a 6-speed manual, the new hardware can do the same in just 5.6 seconds, as per the tests conducted by the manufacturer.
The transmission can be set in one of several modes, all of which can be configured using the available infotainment system and all designed with “video game-like features” in mind.
The grin-inducing mode is called exactly that, N Grin Shift. When engaged, it provides an increase in torque by 7 percent and maximizes transmission response for 20 seconds.
Then there’s the N Power Shift that accelerates with more than 90 percent of throttle to deliver maximum power to the wheels, and the N Track Sense Shift that can read road conditions and activates automatically, selecting the right gear and shift timing “like a professional race car driver.”
Unfortunately for the Americans, they’ll have to wait a little longer before getting their hands on the Veloster N with this transmission. First, the car will be available in South Korea, and only then it will head to other markets.
