2020 Hyundai i10 Is a Bigger Boy with a Meaner Attitude

For more than a decade, South Korean carmaker Hyundai has been attacking the European A-segment with the i10, a small hatch that behaved nice and sold well without causing a stir. With the new generation though, Hyundai plans to turn the car into something much more appealing.

With about a week left until the car’s debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany, Hyundai pulled the wraps off the new generation i10. A meaner, bolder car, meant to strike at the heart of the young European buyer.

The first things that stand out compared to the old version is the more muscular, wider body of the car and the more aggressive stance. The new i10 is 20 mm wider than the version it replaces, while at the same time presenting a roof that is 200 lower than before.

And the new feel will be the focal point of the marketing campaign for the new i10, says Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Hyundai Europe VP of marketing.

“The All-New Hyundai i10 is the latest example of our democratization of new technologies for our customers,” the executive stated.

“We are launching it with the tagline “Go Big.” to emphasize the feeling that customers will get from this uncompromised city car – it might seem like a small car, but it makes a big statement!”

On the inside, changes are extensive as well. The entire interior space seems larger thanks to the layout of the elements, as the vehicle will be available as a four- or five-seater model. The design theme was chosen specifically to attract young buyers: air-vents protruding the door trim, large décor panel on the dashboard and an extra open storage compartment above the glovebox.

Connectivity has been a primary focus of the Hyundai designers for the new i10. As standard, it comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, the largest touchscreen in the segment (8-inches), and wireless charging.

Taking things to a whole new level in terms of connectivity is Hyundai’s Connected Car platform that allows control over some of the car’s functions via a smartphone app.

At launch, the i10 will be available with two engine choices, a 1.0-liter MPi with 67 PS and 96 Nm torque, and a 1.2-liter MPi with 84 PS and 118 Nm torque.
