Before the G70 was even a thing, Genesis Motor published a roadmap of models ranging from the compact executive sedan to mid-luxury SUV. Next year, the South Koreans also plan to launch a near-luxury SUV in the guise of the GV70 and a near-luxury sports coupe with underpinnings from the G70.
On this occasion, the carparazzi caught the GV80 lapping the Nurburgring harder than before and with less camouflage than before. It’s quite a behemoth all covered in black-and-white camouflage, and this apparent perception is amplified by the broad hips, massive grills, and rectangular rear window.

There’s no denying that Genesis wants to go big or go home with the GV80, but curiously enough, a high-performance series of models such as the N at Hyundai isn’t planned for the time being. We also know what type of engines will be offered, along with a dual-clutch transmission with wet clutches.

A 2.5-liter turbo Theta III four-cylinder engine with Smartstream technology opens the list, joined by a 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6 and 3.5-liter turbo V6 gasoline option. Ratings for the six-cylinder plants range from 278 to 380 PS (274 to 375 horsepower) while torque favors the one with compression ignition.

Scheduled to be revealed in November 2019 in production-ready flavor, the GV80 is reportedly 4,945 millimeters long, 1,975 millimeters wide, and 1,715 millimeters tall according to motoring media outlets from South Korea. Previewed at the 2017 New York Auto Show as a fuel-cell electric vehicle, the mid-sized SUV will be offered with a three-row seating option and five seats from the get-go.

The quad-LED headlights and taillights certainly elevate the exterior visuals, but in regard to the interior, spy photographs didn’t reveal the same level of luxury or technology as you might find in the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. If everything goes according to plan, the GV80 will also be the first Genesis utility vehicle the brand will launch in Europe in the second half of 2020.

With the right pricing strategy and a well-established dealership network, the GV80 could spell trouble for Acura and Infiniti in the United States. Mid-sizers with a whiff of luxury are big business stateside, and Genesis needs to play its cards well in order to attract new customers to the brand as well as the GV80.
