When the Hyundai Genesis turned into the Genesis G80, the automaker didn’t change much on a visual level. On sale in the United States since the 2017 model year, 2020 will see Genesis improve the breed with an all-new G80. Regardless of the camouflage wrapped around the body shell of this prototype, there’s no denying the designers were told to make the newcomer as beautiful as possible.
Inspired by the G70 (and Essentia Concept to a certain degree), the 2020 Genesis G80 serves as the more luxurious alternative to the Kia Stinger. To be manufactured at the Ulsan assembly plant in South Korea from 2019 onwards, the next generation also appears to be more curvaceous.

Wider and more hunkered down, the 2020 Genesis G80 featured in the photo gallery doesn’t appear to feature the factory-spec exhaust system. Considering that it was spied hot-weather testing in the United States of America, the automaker might be trialing an existing engine or an all-new design altogether.

We have a general idea about the latter powerplant, coming in the guise of the Theta III. The four-cylinder engine is expected to go official in 2019, displacing 2.5 liters and available in both aspirated and turbocharged flavors. Reports from the South Korean motoring media suggest that the Theta III will be a jack of all trades, with Hyundai expected to use the engine in FWD, RWD, AWD, and mid-engined applications.

The G80 executive sedan will be twinned with the GV80 sport utility vehicle, and as you would expect, both models are going to be offered with some sort of electrified powertrain options. A hybrid or plug-in hybrid are most likely at this moment in time, with Genesis to go fully electric some point during the next decade.

Last time we’ve heard anything on the subject, Hyundai Motor announced that Genesis Motors would introduce its first-ever electric vehicle in 2021. Described as a “long-range EV,” the mystery model promises a range of at least 500 kilometers (310 miles).
