2020 Genesis G80 Spied on the Track, Looks Flashy and Original

Mercedes and BMW are such popular brands that every block has a few. So what do you do when you want a luxury sedan but don't want to go German? Well, for the past few years, a brand called Genesis has been on the rise, and the G80 is their star player.

The current G80 is pretty old. In fact, it used to be called a Hyundai Genesis and is one of the heaviest vehicles in its class due to the outdated platform. We know that an all-new model will show up later this year, and here it is, looking all-new and rather different.

Genesis has tried to preview this styling with a number of concepts and the G90, which is more of a refresh. But the world isn't quite ready for this car. It's got a giant, bold grille shaped like a pentagon, which is mirrored by the outline of those oversized exhaust tips.

Meanwhile, both the headlights and taillights are split into bands of thin LEDs that make even Lexus seem conventional. And thankfully for all you family car buyers, Genesis is simultaneously working on the SUV equivalent as well.

Part of the appeal of this brand is how much luxury you're getting inside - leather, wood, lots of speakers and good screens. Let's not forget that while BMW is taking a lot of flack for its Apple and Android connectivity, parent company Hyundai has some of the best infotainments for normal cars.

Engine-wise, we know that the new G80 will max out with a V6, either the turbo 3.3-liter or the 3.8-liter or both. On top of this, we should see a 2.5-liter base unit, which may or may not be turbocharged (Korea will have a normal version for sure).

Just because you see this prototype at the Nurburgring doesn't mean it's coming to the European market, but we're keeping our fingers crossed. The boss of the Genesis brand said in 2018 that we'll witness a UK-focused relaunch in 2020, culminating with compact crossovers and EVs.
