Already available in the United States along with the FX2 package, the Ranger FX4 will arrive in Australia in December 2019 capped at 1,000 examples of the breed. The special-edition pickup comes exclusively as a dual cab for the 2020 model year, packing either a four-cylinder turbo diesel or an inline-five option.
Last launched in the Land Down Under in early 2017, the FX4 sits between the XLT and Wildtrak in the Ranger’s hierarchy. The 4x4 pickup features red 3 decals on the front doors and tailgate, darkened bi-LED headlamps, an extended sports bar painted in black, and black paint for the mirror caps, door handles and tailgate handle, as well as the fenders, front grille, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Front sports seats and leather accents, contrast stitching, embossed FX4 logos, and Tinted Graphite garnish on the door cards and instrument panel are also featured. The specific floor mats and soft-touch instrument panel top are complemented by tech-savvy equipment such as SYNC 3 with smartphone mirroring.

Aside from Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the voice-activated satellite navigation and digital instrumentation sweeten the deal. A reversing camera makes parking that bit easier, and as far as capability is concerned, the Ranger FX4 with 4x4 for the Australian market is much obliged to pull 3,500 kilograms.

As mentioned beforehand, two engine options are offered along with two automatic transmissions. The first and most interesting is the EcoBlue 2.0-liter with 213 PS (210 horsepower) and 10-speed gearbox. Customers who want more displacement can opt for the Duratorq 3.2-liter with 200 PS (197 horsepower) on tap and a good ol’ six-speed transmission.

Ford of Australia hasn’t announced the pricing for the Ranger FX4, but customers can spend more to spruce up their trucks with the Tech Pack. This optional extra adds semi-automatic parallel parking functionality and adaptive cruise control to the mid-size workhorse.

All in all, it’s great that the FX4 returns to Australia but we’re not too sure why Ford is limiting the production run to 1,000 units in the first instance. Not even the Raptor gets that treatment, which goes to show that the Blue Oval works in mysterious ways.
