2020 Ford Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid V6 Confirmed

In production since 2010 on the Ford D4 platform, the fifth generation of the Explorer will go out of production towards the end of the 2019 model year. The 2020 Ford Explorer, on the other hand, will switch to an all-new vehicle architecture.

The modular platform known as CD6 is it, engineered for front-,rear-, and all-wheel-drive applications. In the case of the Explorer, the Ford Motor Company will go with the rear-/all-wheel-drive setup because that’s how the cookie crumbles in this segment.

Twinned with the 2020 Lincoln Aviator, the all-new Explorer will also introduce an all-new Police Interceptor Utility. An order guide of the police-duty SUV surfaced on the Internet, and from it, we came to learn that three engine options are in the pipeline. Every one comes with all-wheel drive as standard, along with the 10-speed automatic transmission Ford co-developed with General Motors.

The first option is the 3.3-liter Ti-VCT naturally aspirated V6 with direct injection, after which Ford lists the 3.3-liter with hybrid assistance. A previous story coming straight from the Ford Motor Company suggests the Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid will be capable of “at least 24 miles per gallon,” leading to saving of up to $3,200 in yearly fuel savings.

“We’re committed to electrifying vehicles for all customers, including law enforcement who need the high performance and low operating costs that Ford’s next-generation hybrids will excel at providing,” declared Hau Thai-Tang, head of product development and purchasing. The Aviator, meanwhile, will level up to a plug-in hybrid V6 powertrain.

Turning our attention back to the 2020 Ford Explorer, the range-topping engine option is the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6. There are no ratings for the twin-turbocharged powerplant in the document at hand, but as far as the Continental and MKZ are concerned, the engine easily develops 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.

Compared to the Police Interceptor Utility, the civilian model could also be offered with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo we know and love from the current Explorer, Mustang, Focus RS, and Lincoln MKC. The engine in question is good for at least 280 horsepower and 310 pound-feet.
