Forget the GT and F-150 Raptor because a Mustang is the most powerful road-going Ford ever made. It’s also one of the heaviest ‘Stangs ever at 4,225 pounds for the base curb weight, meaning that the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye is the bigger boy of the two models.
Featuring a wheelbase of 107 inches and a length of 190.2 inches, the Shelby GT500 also happens to be one of the most imposing ‘Stangs out there. The eSourceBook for the slitherin’ serpent also reveals the front-and-rear weight distribution at 56.2 and 43.8 percent.
That’s because the Predator V8, a supercharged engine based on the Voodoo V8 in the GT350 and GT350R, is pretty heavy. In addition to the 760-horsepower fury under the hood, the Tremec seven-speed DCT is exclusive to the Shelby GT500. There’s no manual option at all, a rather unexpected switch from the previous version of the Mustang Shelby GT500.
It’s also worth highlighting that every other Mustang on offer can be specified with a good ol’ six-speed and three pedals, and no, an automatic or dual-clutch transmission aren’t available for the GT350 or GT350R. Given what Dodge does with the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, we’re not surprised Ford couldn’t make a case for a stick shift in the Shelby GT500.
The eSourceBook doesn’t list the 0-to-60 and quarter-mile times, but do remember that the Blue Oval promised a sub-11-second pass on the blacktop. The Carbon Fiber Track Package is a must if you want to unleash the potential of the Shelby GT500, priced at a whopping $18,500.
Add some carbon fiber on the instrument panel and the Technology Package along with the Handling Package, and you’re looking at a retail price of $97,995. Given the status of the Shelby GT500 within the Mustang range and Ford lineup, there’s no denying U.S. dealerships will adjust the MSRP accordingly. In other words, markups are in the pipeline, big time!
