We’ve been hearing for too many years now that Ford is bringing back the Bronco. After confirmation from the Dearborn-based automaker that the all-round SUV is on its way back, the Ford Motor Company went silent about the Bronco. Thankfully, the carparazzi caught the real deal out in the open, the test mule wearing bodywork borrowed from the AU-spec Everest.
Published by our friends at the Bronco6G forum, the first-ever 2020 Ford Bronco spy photos don’t reveal anything much, but offer glimpses as to what’s in the offing from the lifestyle-oriented SUV. First things first, the mule is seen testing alongside the Ranger pickup. There’s no coincidence the two are being tested together, chiefly because they share the same chassis.

Confirmed to start production in 2019 for the 2020 model year, the body-on-frame SUV will "live up to [its] heritage" if Raj Nair, chief technical officer and executive vice president of product development, is to be believed. It has to, if I may add, especially because the new Bronco is targeting the sales pie made up by the likes of the ever-popular Jeep Wrangler. I know what you’re thinking right now, but apparently no, the Bronco won’t look like the Everest.

Early rumors indicated this possibility, but Ford took note of the talk on enthusiast websites, and Raj Nair made it clear the 2020 Bronco’s design will be its own, not a rehashed Everest. Bearing in mind the 2010 Explorer was testing with a Flex body shell during chassis development, we’re certainly looking forward to what the Bronco has to offer from a design standpoint.

According to an earlier report on the 2020 Ford Bronco, it’s highly likely the mid-size SUV with seven seats will be offered with a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6. The twin-turbo engine is reportedly good for 325 horsepower, whereas the squared-off body panels are apparently inspired by the Troller T4 from Brazil.

The 2019 Ranger is expected to gain a diesel engine of sorts, and the rumor mill suggests the 2020 Bronco could get it too. Whatever happens, we’re sure looking forward to the 2019 Detroit Auto Show.
