A fair chunk of the total Leon sales go to the Cupra models, and about five years ago, SEAT had the brilliant idea of adding a wagon. This is the second generation of that car, which should be called the 2020 Cupra Leon ST, not the Leon ST Cupra.
ST is SEAT talk for a wagon. The body style is identical to the Golf Variant/Sportwagen. However, you can't get a GTI version of the long Golf, whereas the Leon ST Cupra is a bit of a bargain. Over the years, the model has featured many different power outputs: 265, 280, 290, and 300 HP. Was there a short run with 310 HP, or was that only for the hatch? We're not even sure.
The output is mentioned because it's the biggest mystery surrounding this new generation. The boss of the newly founded Cupra brand said a few months ago that the Cupra Leon would debut in the late part of 2020 and have 245 horsepower from a hybrid engine. Now, that sounds like a small downgrade, but the word "exclusively" was never mentioned, so we could have a more powerful version added on top.
This could be what we're seeing here because the normal (hatchback) 2020 Cupra Leon we saw had only two small exhaust tips, whereas this features quad tips on what are clearly dual mufflers. We can tie this up with the fact that the black alloy wheels look bigger too, probably 20 inches.
That 245 horsepower engine has never been fully confirmed. We presumed that it's a 1.4 or 1.5-liter turbo with an electric motor (a plug-in system) since that's what was on the Cupra Formentor concept, but it could also have a mild-hybrid version of the 2.0 TSI from the Golf GTI. This setup would be cheaper to make and lighter too.
Of course, the best part of the current Leon Cupra ST is having the 4Drive AWD system and 300 horsepower engine, the only SEAT model ever to crack 0 to 100 km/h in about 5 seconds. And we're pleasantly surprised to see prop shafts in the middle of those black wheels. But where is the Haldex-style case? Maybe we need to call Detective Pikachu for this one because it might be electric.
