2020 Chevrolet Corvette Drops Its Top, Convertible to Sell for $67,495

During an event at the Kennedy Space Center this week, Chevrolet upped the ante when it comes to the new Corvette line, as it revealed the convertible version, introduced the C8.R race car and let slip pricing for the newest addition to the range.

With the new C8 convertible, Chevy is both going back to the nameplate’s roots and previews a totally different future. Built to pay homage to the original Corvette of 1953, which was offered solely as a convertible, the new car uses, for the first time, a two-piece hardtop.

Priced at $67,495, which is $7,500 more than the 1LT Stingray coupe, the convertible promises to bring pretty much the same performance levels, but also the unique feeling of driving with the top down.

The roof of the car uses six electric motors to get taken down in just 16 seconds, even at speeds of 30 mph (48 kph). Once retracted, it still allows for two sets of golf clubs to be stored in the trunk.

Using the same fighter-jet inspired design as the coupe shown a couple of months ago, this variant of the C8 makes use of a tonneau cover fitted with aerodynamically shaped nacelles to reduce air circulation in the cabin and provide venting for the engine.

As standard, the roof comes in the same color as the rest of the car, but it can optionally be specified in Carbon Flash metallic, including for the nacelles.

Under the hood, the hardtop retains the same mid-mounted engine of the new range. That is the 6.2-liter small-block V8 linked to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The engine develops 495 horsepower and 637 Nm of torque and, with the Z51 Performance Package, can accelerate to 60 in under three seconds.

The rear spoiler of the Z51 is available for the convertible as well, and with it on the car has the same drag levels with the top up as the coupe.

The new Chevrolet Corvette convertible can already be pre-ordered. Deliveries are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2020.
