In 1978, BMW launched its first M-badged car, the M1. People have been begging for a new mid-engined supercar, but in the meantime, Bavaria is keeping busy with very profitable performance off-roaders, like this 2020 BMW X6 M.
We should have said "Bavaria and Spartanburg," because that's where BMW's hub of SUV production is. It's where test drive events for the upcoming X7 were held and where the new X5 rolled off the line. However, this X6 M was sighted in Austria, where its aim is clearly to do some alpine testing in the company of its predecessor model.
Even though it's largely based on the new X5, the X6 has its character to which the M badge can only add. For example, we noticed that the LED halo signature of the headlights has shrunk.
Below that, the X6 M sports large air intakes with styling inspired by the M5. The kidney grille design is wrong, though. It's supposed to have black double bars and an optional black frame. Moving on to the side, we notice the standard M blue caliper brakes and a new wing mirror. With chunky fender flares, this sports activity coupe is sure to be a hit.
Meanwhile, the back of the new X6 M features the trademark quad exhaust pipes, as well as a small trunk lid spoiler and narrow taillights. Those pipes are sure to be connected to a 4.4-liter V8 engine, which will produce at least 600 horsepower and 750 Nm right out of the box, with a competition package adding more (about 25 HP) further down the line.
The performance SUV segment is filled with contenders at the moment, some of which are likely to be more powerful than the X6 M, such as the next GLE 63 S. But as we've seen with the M5 vs. the E63, BMW can still offer something special.
Considering we haven't even seen the regular 3rd-generation X6, this M version has to be at least a year away from coming out. In the meantime, the X3 M, X4 M and possibly even the X5 M will debut.
