Back in January 2018, a Spanish motoring publication published an article according to which BMW plans to bring the X2 Convertible to market. It is believed the Bavarian automaker conducted studies in regard to the potential of this model, and the customer base appears to be ready for an alternative to the Range Rover Evoque Convertible.
Fast-forward to December 2018, and Auto-Bild.de follows up with a cropped picture of a Monopoly board that features the X2 Convertible. Monopoly bei McDonald’s is a seasonal affair in Germany, and for this edition of the contest, ten examples of the 2 Series Convertible serve as the grand prize.
The German motoring publication doesn’t expect the X2 Convertible to arrive before 2020, which sounds alright considering the launches that BMW has to undertake in 2019. The lack of photographic evidence of test mules is testament the X2 Convertible won’t arrive sooner than 2020.
As expected, the soft-top brother of the X2 will come at a price and with the best engine options available. The F39 in M35i flavor comes as standard with xDrive all-wheel drive, the B48 turbocharged four-cylinder, 306 PS (302 horsepower), and 450 Nm (332 pound-feet) of torque.
Because peak torque is available from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm, the X2 is much obliged to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds. In the case of the X2 Convertible, the heft of the additional strengthening elements and soft-top roof's mechanism could translate to 5, maybe 5.1 seconds.
Produced in Regensburg alongside the X1, the X2 is based on a front-wheel-drive vehicle architecture shared with MINI, the 2 Series Active Tourer and 2 Series Gran Tourer, as well as the 1 Series Sedan for China. In other words, don't get your hopes up for the X2 M because it's not going to happen.
