Nearly four months after the facelift for the X1 series was introduced, BMW upgraded the powertrain offering with the launch of the plug-in hybrid variant of the car. According to the Germans, this is the first car in its family with plug-in hybrid drive to be sold in markets outside China.
As usual with this type of cars, the combination between the ICE engine the electric motor / battery duo should ensure better fuel consumption, lower emissions and even the possibility of driving in full electric mode for a while.
In the X1, the hybrid powertrain comprises a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine, an electric motor and a 9.7 kWh battery to store electricity. The gasoline engine has an output of 125 hp and a maximum torque of 220 Nm, and is controlled by means of a 6-speed Steptronic transmission.
Additionally, the electric motor mounted on the rear axle develops 95 hp and 165 Nm of torque, making the combined output of the system stand at 220 hp and 385 Nm of torque. In this configuration, the X1 accelerates to 62 mph in seven seconds flat and tops at 192 kph (119 mph).
The battery that completes the plug-in hybrid system can store enough electricity for the X1 to drive in full electric mode for 57 km (35 miles). Once depleted, it can then be recharged in about five hours using a standard plug.
With that in mind, BMW says the fuel consumption for this X1 start at 2.0 liters/100 km (117 mpg) and CO2 emissions start at 43 grams/km.
This new powertrain options joins an already extensive offer available for the X1. Before the PHEV was introduced earlier this week, there were 16 engine - transmission combinations to choose from.
BMW did not say when the new X1 xDrive25e will become available (probably 2020) and did not announce pricing yet. Full details on the car can be found in the document attached below.
