BMW is currently taking its passion for filling up niches to new heights and, as a result of that, the revived 8 Series family will also include a four-door part. And while we've already shown you the 2020 M850i Gran Coupe doing its thing in traffic yesterday, we are now back on the topic, with the velocity behemoth having shown up at the Nurburgring.
The first question that pops regarding the approaching introduction of this car is "was the thing really necessary" and the answer is "yes". So, how does one build a business case for a five-meter-plus four-door coup?
Well, for one thing, the 8er Gran Coupe replaces the 6 Series Gran Coupe. And upping the ante on the badging front also means the car will offer a bit of extra space.
It's enough to check out the roofline, which goes further back, to understand that the slight headroom limitations of the 6er GC should be overcome. And, in case you're worried about the weight, it seems that premium German carmakers have become extremely good at making two-ton-plus cars feels lighter from the driver's perspective.
Thanks to all the design clues found on the prototype, we're expecting to be dealing with the M Performance model here. The M850i will be animated by a 4.4-liter V8 delivering 530 hp. Then again, those who prefer to burn oil won't be left out, as the M850d, with its 400 hp quad-turbo straight-six, is also on its way.
While lesser models animated by powertrains with fewer cylinders are also on the menu, we mustn't forget about the M8 Gran Coupe - the former will compete against the Mercedes-Benz CLS, while the latter is set to go after the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door.
And most of the splendid styling cues displayed by the M8 GC concept car should make it into production, so we can't wait to see the two Teutons duking it out.
