Set to make its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2020 BMW M340i has been brought to light today. It's a performance sedan that finally bridges the gap between the regular 3 Series that we saw in Paris and the upcoming M3.
People have been asking for an M340i ever since the M240i came out because they wanted the look of an M car and the AWD without the tremendous cost of owning an actual M3. Pretty soon, they'll be able to do that, and the specs are more than enticing.

For the American market, the 3.0-liter turbo under the hood of this car is being rated at 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. xDrive is available but not fitted as standard, and when equipped, this sedan model will reach 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds, so it's pretty much matching the old M3.

Obviously, the M Performance makeover includes a body kit, and it's way easier to tell it apart from the M Sport than on other BMWs. For example, the car in these pictures sports some grey blades at the edges of the side intakes, as well as a new kidney grille design, reminiscent of the Z4 M40i. No surprises there!

Over at the back, a diffuser has been carried over, but it's paired to the typical rectangular exhausts of an M Performance car. Finer details include silver mirror caps and blue brakes (348 mm four-piston at the front). BMW also says body rigidity has increased by 25 percent, and let's not forget the base 3 Series is lighter thanks to increased use of aluminum. It has a rear diff and some fancy dampers, but we don't know yet if they are going to be standard.

The interior is a sea of black leather, uplifted by some blue stitching and aluminum inserts. While it might not be the most exciting thing to look at, we bet there are M Performance parts incoming that can fix that. Being a 2020 model year, the M340i will go on sale next summer.
