The carmaker did not tamper with the internal combustion engine that makes up a part of the hybrid drivetrain. The engine continues to be the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder used before, developing 136 hp, working together with the rear-axle mounted electric motor is the same as well, churning out 88 hp.

What has changed is the capacity of the battery. Keeping the dimensions of the previous version, the new battery comes with a capacity of 10.0 kWh, a noticeable increase from the 7.7 kWh in the previous unit.

The battery can be charged from a standard socket in five hours, but that time can be reduced to 3 hours using a BMW i Wallbox.

The increased capacity means an increase of 25 percent in range, from 45 km (28 miles) to 57 km (35 miles). At the same time, fuel consumption for the ICE engine dropped from 2.5 liters/100 km (94 mpg) to 1.9 liters/100 km (123 mpg).

“Recent advances in battery cell technology for BMW plug-in hybrid models are extending the capabilities in terms of locally emission-free driving pleasure – both in the city and beyond,” said BMW in a statement.

"The new battery generation in the BMW 225xe Active Tourer increases the electrically powered range of the urban all-rounder by more than 25 per cent to between 55 and 57 kilometres."

The combined power of the electric motor and combustion engine is 224 hp and 385 Nm of torque. These figures mean the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 6.7 seconds and can top at 202 kph 125 mph.

Pricing for the upgraded 225xe Active Tourer was not announced. Full details on the car can be found in the document attached below.
