If you want your Audi wagon not to look like it's on the airport shuttle run, you'll need to step up your have and but the S6 or RS6.
These are the latest spyshots of the next-generation S6, likely to come out within the next couple of months. The test prototype is not wearing much in the way of camouflage, but that's because most of the body elements are from the A6 S line.
What's not the same as the regular A6 is the quad-tipped exhaust system which all S cars have. We're glad they decided to take this route instead of hiding them under the bumper, like on the SQ5.
A few things are missing from this car, such as the silver mirror caps, badging and S-specific wheels. But other than that, what you see is what you'll get.
By now, all Audi fans have heard the bad news: the S6 and S7 are both downsizing to a 2.9-liter V6 engine. It's the same unit offered in the RS4 Avant. But here, it will have to carry around 200 kilos of extra weight. It's also possible that mild hybrid assistance will be included since all A6 models have this.
The number of cylinders in the S6 has changed over the years and even included a 2.2-liter 5-cylinder in the earliest models. However, the S6 everybody remembers had an impressive 5.2-liter V10 producing 425 horsepower. The outgoing model also downsized, back in 2012. But the 4-liter twin-turbo V8 had a lot of tuning potential.
The rest of the powertrain will include an 8-speed automatic and permanent AWD, with a mechanical diff optionally available. Sources have claimed that this S6 will be the first to be powered by a diesel engine. But even though the 4.0 TDI is an impressive engine, we don't see Audi creating a rival for the BMW M550d just yet.
