Decades ago, station wagons were American favorites, as local families were suckers for the space they provided. Yet the rise of the much roomier SUVs nearly killed them off, sending the station wagon to the outskirts of the sales charts.
Some carmakers, including Audi, are trying to re-ignite the customers’ appeal for this type of vehicle by shifting the focus from family car to high-performance thrill ride. And as of this month, the German carmaker will do so with the launch of the RS 6 Avant.

This is the first time this nameplate gets across the ocean, and it will show in front of a live audience at the Los Angeles Auto Show starting November 22. But before that happens, the car will be on display in Malibu, at the Bluffs Park Cars & Coffee event.

“Audi has a strong heritage in exciting wagon-fans around the world that have, over many years, been drawn to their design, performance and no-compromise character,” justifies the decision Filip Brabec, vice president Product Management, Audi of America.

“The passionate response of U.S. customers eagerly awaiting this car was the number one reason we chose to debut the RS 6 Avant to our fans and enthusiasts first.”

In the Europe, the RS6 Avant is priced from €117,500, but for now it’s not known how much it will cost in the States.

The car is equipped with a mild-hybrid 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, a standard eight-speed tiptronic transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, and develops 600 hp and 800 Nm of torque.

These figures allow it to be the high-performance thrill ride Audi is advertising it to be, as acceleration time has been rated at 3.6 seconds, and the top speed, limited, at 250 kph (155 mph).

The mild-hybrid system allows it to coast up to 40 seconds with the engine switched off, translating into fuel savings of 0.8 liters/100 km.
