Sharing the vehicle architecture with the Q3, the Q4 promises the exterior design of the Q8 at a more affordable price. The coupe crossover from Audi competes against the BMW X2, and based on the near-production look of the prototype, the world premiere should take place sometime in 2019 for the 2020 model year.
The first time we’ve heard the Ingolstadt-based automaker is interested in bringing the Q4 to market was in 2012. Then Audi trademarked Q4 and S Q4 with the European Union Intellectual Property Office in 2016, fueling the rumor mill once again.

As for the confirmation of the coupe-ified Q3, head of exterior design Andreas Mindt announced the newcomer in November 2018. It remains to be seen if the RS Q4 will ever happen, but in all likelihood, it will. The carparazzi already spied the RS Q3 out in the wild, featuring oval-shaped exhaust pipes and the 2.5-liter turbo inline-5 we know and love from the RS3 Sportback.

The second generation of the Q3 made its public debut last month at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, transitioning to the MQB vehicle architecture. For the time being, the 45 TFSI quattro is the most powerful engine option, packing 230 PS. The 2.0 TDI turbo diesel is also available, but the cheapest Q3 on sale right now in Germany is the 35 TFSI with 150 PS, front-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual transmission at €33,700.

Turning our attention back to the Q4, the head of exterior design also promises the newcomer will stand outfrom the rest of the lineup. A plug-in hybrid option is also under development, expected to feature an EV range of 50 kilometers (31 miles). This configuration is mostly developed with China in mind, which imposed tougher regulations from April 2018 in order to reduce energy consumption and improve the country’s carbon footprint.

9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment, virtual cockpit, and wireless charging for Qi-enabled smartphones are other highlights to expect from the Q4. In addition to the X2, the Q4 will also need to prove its worth against the Range Rover Evoque and next generation of the Mercedes-Benz GLA.
