As it moves forward with its plans of launching a great deal of plug-in hybrid cars by the end of the year, German carmaker Audi revealed on Monday (October 21) the full scope of capabilities for the PHEV variant of the new A6.
Turning the A6 into a PHEV meant linking the car’s internal combustion engine to a lithium-ion battery and an electric motor. In this particular A6, the internal combustion engine is a 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder gasoline engine that cranks out 252 ps.

By adding the electric components to the car meant both a name change – the model is called by its full name A6 55 TFSI e quattro – but also a significant increase in power: the electric motor adds enough horses to the troop to make the total stand at 367 hp and 500 Nm of torque.

The lithium-ion battery, stored in the car’s rear, is good for 14.1 kWh and can provide the car with a fully electric range of 53 km (32.9 miles). The electric motor sends its power to the wheels via the seven-speed S tronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive, and can accelerate the car to a top speed of 135 km/h (83.9 mph).

The combined power of the system allows the A6 55 TFSI e an acceleration time of 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 250 kph(155 mph). Equally impressive is the mileage achieved by the PHEV.

According to Audi, the use of the electric hardware in this car allows for a combined fuel consumption rating of 2.1–1.9 liters per 100 km, or the equivalent of 123 mpg.

Audi has already opened the orders books for the car, but for now it announced pricing only in Germany. In the home market, the car will sell from €68,850.

The A6 PHEV is only the first in what is to be a long line of PHEV wearing the Audi logo. The A7, A8, Q5 and Q7 will be up next.
