The rumors about a second facelift for the A4 turned out to be true. Just after Audi started listing the 2019 model on its websites, new test prototypes began testing in the Arctic. Time to cancel that order?
The A4 operates in a shrinking segment, that of relatively small luxury sedans. It has a variety of rivals, including the newly launched BMW 3 Series and Volvo S60. As customer expectations are still growing, Audi has begun developing serious updates for this model which are said to cost about half a million euros.
So, as we mentioned when we released the first spyshots for the 2020 A4 Avant yesterday, this model missed out on all the Marc Lichte magic because he arrived too late to change the design. That's why the A4 has those weird drooping headlights, which is the first thing they are improving on the facelift.
As you can see, the front end looks a lot like the more significant, newer A6. It's got nicer LEDs connected to a wide hexagonal grille. Also, the chin spoiler is new, but they are keeping the sensors in the fog light area and adding scoops that channel air into the wheel arches.
These spyshots also clearly preview the new back end, where the A4 is getting a tweaked trunk, refreshed taillights and rectangular exhaust tips on both sides which may or may not be fake.
The interior is expected to mirror the design of the A6 and all the other Audis which came out this year, which means two large screens on the dash, one of which controls the car functions like climate control or driver aids.
In the powertrain department, we expect Audi to add new stuff even before the facelift is revealed, as this is a competitive segment. This should include 2.0 and 3.0-liter engines with a mild-hybrid setup, efficient quattro and two kinds of auto gearboxes.
