The type of car once thought extinct has once again appeared in the European urban jungle. We're talking about the long-legged version of a normal hatchback, or in this case, the 2020 Audi A1 Citycarver.
We were among the first to report that Audi has this nameplate in the works, after which some spyshots also appeared. The A1 Citycarver is, as expected, a rugged version of a normal B-segment hatchback. For a while, it looked like crossovers forced cars like the Polo Cross into extinction. But they are making a comeback with the Ford Fiesta Active, the Citroen C3 urban and the Kia Picanto X-Line.

Because its platform won't allow an AWD system to be installed, the A1 Citycarver can't be called an "allroad," but it's built in that spirit. Its bodywork has been emphasized with shiny black inserts over the fender arches, added silver spoilers and tweaked air intakes/vents. And for some reason, they also fitted the larger trunk spoiler from the S line package.

Also, the Citycarver seems to have its own grille design and has been decked out in black trim for this Edition One special edition, finished in Pulse Orange and sporting 18-inch two-tone wheels. At the end of the day, this is more of a lifestyle statement, as shiny black plastic won't save you from rocks chipping your paint. But at least the ride height is 40mm taller, split between 35mm for the suspension and 5mm thanks to the wheels.

Customers can choose between nine colors for the exterior, two for the roof (black or grey metallic) and interior accents in copper, orange, silver or mint. The S line package for the interior can also add Alcantara leather. But most of this is shared with the normal A1 Sportback. No pricing information is available at this moment, but we figure it's going to cost from about €33,000.
