There's a group of die-hard Volkswagen fanatics in Germany that can't imagine life without one particular VW. They are the GTI fans, loyal to the bone and for them the company is preparing something special in 2019.
We already know that a facelift (minor upgrade) for the Golf will be introduced in 2016, and two years after that the Golf 8 will be launched. Its somewhat lighter underpinnings (around 50 kg/110lbs weight reduction) will also be used by the 2019 Golf GTI.
A new report from German magazine Auto Bild has shed light on very interesting details regarding this car. The all-new hot hatch will arrive with three power stages. The base model will have the same 265 PS output as the current Leon Cupra. The GTI Performance will top that by increasing the output to 300 PS, while the GTI Club Sport will top the range with 326 PS.
Yes, you heard right, there will be a front-wheel drive Golf with as much power as a BMW M135i. It also means VW si done with making only small power increases with every GTI generation. From the Mk5 to the MK6 and Mk7, we only got 10 hp more, but this time they are going for glory.
Volkswagen is also considering separating the Golf GTI models made for the US market and the Chinese one from the rest of the range. Dropping a V6 engine under the bonnet is also being considered, our sources say. That decision hasn't been made yet, but what we do know for sure is the next hot hatch from Germany will be more powerful.
