Developing 156 PS (154 horsepower) at 5,000 rpm and 265 Nm (195 pound-feet) of torque from 1,850 to 3,850 rpm, the Drive-E three-cylinder turbo is now available to order in Europe. The XC40 isn't the first Volvo to receive the 1.5-liter engine, and as standard, the powertrain comes with a six-speed manual transmission.
A “nimble and efficient, urban-friendly vehicle” according to Volvo, the XC40 T3 will be offered with an eight-speed automatic of the torque-converter type at a later date. It should be mentioned the the compact crossover utility vehicle will be available with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, though this gearbox is exclusive to the plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

For the time being, the T3 is joined by the D3, D4, T4, and T5. The most potent of the lot is the Drive-E T5, which packs 247 PS (244 horsepower) and 350 Nm (260 pound-feet) of torque from a displacement of 2.0 liters.

"The XC40 is the ideal recipient of the new T3 engine, a unit that demonstrates Volvo's commitment to innovative engineering and technology that prioritises compact packaging without compromising performance and efficiency,” declared Jon Wakefield, managing director of Volvo in the United Kingdom. “Together with the other powertrain additions to the lineup, it gives us a comprehensive model range that will help the XC40 achieve its full market potential."

Regarding that potential, it’s best to wait for the plug-in hybrid to show up, as well as the electric drivetrain. Even though we know the T5 Twin Engine will be front-wheel drive, there’s still a lot left unanswered about the electric XC40. Expected to show up in late 2019 for the 2020 model year, the EV is anticipated to go more than 400 kilometers (250 miles) on a full charge, maybe even 500 kilometers (310 miles).

Polestar is working on electric vehicles of its own. The 2 will compete with the Tesla Model 3 whereas the 3 will ride on the second generation of the Scalable Product Architecture that underpins the 90 Series and 60 Series. In the meantime, the Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid will have to make do with no less than 600 ponies and 1,000 Nm (738 pound-feet) of torque.
