Among the six new cars to be tested by the organization was Volkswagen’s new Touareg, a model so packed with safety features and technologies that it had no problem acing the trials. Euro NCAP awarded the newest SUV a five-star rating, it was revealed on Wednesday.

As per the organization’s findings, the Touareg with standard equipment (the tested version was a 3.0 diesel Elegance model) provided 89 percent overall adult occupant protection and an 86 percent child occupant protection.

For those outside of the SUV, namely pedestrians, the new Touareg manages to protect to some degree 72 percent of them. Safety assist has been rated at 81 percent.

Volkswagen says that the success of the SUV in the tests was insured by the use of an optimized body structure that complements the safety systems already deployed on the car, from seat belts to airbags and assist systems.

At the beginning of the year, the Euro NCAP introduced revised and extended testing protocols for 2018. For the first time ever, the cyclist detection system with auto brake gets a closer look, alongside a variety of crash scenarios involving cars and pedestrians.

Revised rating updates for this year include testing of pedestrian detection in darkness and obscure lighting conditions and how the emergency lane keeping and reacts to a road edge, marked and unmarked.

“Overall, these latest results demonstrate that, as Euro NCAP’s test protocols evolve and become more demanding, a 5-star rating remains an achievable although challenging objective for the auto industry,” said in a statement after the release of the new results Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP secretary general.

“It is particularly positive and welcome that manufacturers are performing well in the assessment of vulnerable road user protection systems such as AEB for cyclists.”
