It's been a while since a hot prototype crashed at the Nurburgring. Yesterday, a heavily camouflaged Toyota Supra had an unexpected encounter with the protective barriers on the sides of Europe's most famous circuit.
Our spy photographer tells, who was on the scene at that time, tells us the 2019 Supra crashed at the Döttinger Höhe, a long straight named after the nearby village of Döttingen.
The Supra hit the guardrail on the right of the track and came to rest on the left. All things considered, the damage doesn' look too bad. The right part of both bumpers is broken, and the suspension of the rear wheel was reportedly damaged as well.
Toyota has not released a statement, so we can't say what caused the crash, but it could be something as simple as high-speed stability issues, not necessarily mechanical issues.
Fortunately, the driver didn't sustain any injuries, and even though the Supra is supposed to be revealed soon, there's still plenty of time to do more testing before its launch. With the BMW Z4, its platform sister, debuting soon, we should get a pretty good idea of what the Toyota sportscar is like.
No 2JZ for this one... unless you swap it. Toyota will offer this car with two turbocharged engines of BMW making. The base unit will be a 2-liter 4-banger (B48B20) with 265 HP (261bhp) while the high-performance model will have a 3-liter (B58B30) engine making 340 HP (335bhp). Rumor has it the latter may cost as much as $63,000.
While the Japanese automaker claims the Supra will be more hardcore than the Z4, there's no getting around the fact that BMW plans to offer an M40i Competition Package with 381 HP (376bhp) and track-focused goodies.
Expected to go on sale in the first half of 2019, the Mk4 Supra will be built alongside the Z4 at the Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria.
