Of all things that South Africa is known for, Subaru ownership isn’t up there at the top of the list. But regardless, the automaker decided to come up with a limited-edition model that also happens to be “the fastest, most powerful STI ever.”
The Diamond Edition celebrates three decades of Subaru Tecnica International, which was registered in – lo and behold - the month of April of 1988. The automaker may be months off from the actual anniversary, but to make matters worse, three decades translates to the pearl anniversary.

Pre-orders are go, and pricing starts at 799,000 South African rand, making the Diamond Edition one of the most expensive WRX STI models ever to have graced the public road. Converted to U.S. dollars, the rally-bred special edition costs more than $56,000. The WRX STI Type RA, on the other hand, retails at $49,855.

Subaru quotes 260 kW at 4,500 rpm and 464 Nm at 4,000 rpm from the 2.5-liter boxer engine with turbocharging technology, which works out at 349 horsepower (354 PS) and 342 pound-feet of torque. Congratulations Subaru; you finally managed to catch up with what Ford has been doing for a number of years now with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost in the Focus RS!

Top speed remains unchanged at 255 km/h (158 mph), but Subaru highlights that acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) is 0.7 seconds quicker than the standard sibling. More to the point, the Diamond Edition can pull of 5.03 seconds at an altitude of 1,410 meters (4,626 feet) above sea level.

In addition to the underhood upgrade, the WRX STI Diamond Edition is 20 millimeters wider. Spacing out the wheels was necessary for the high-visibility yellow body kit, which complements the blue paintwork like a charm. The cabin also benefits from some special touches, including the dashboard inlays and a numbered plaque.

No more than 30 examples of the breed are going to be produced, and the first cars are expected to his South African dealerships in January 2019. We’re not sure how long will it take Subaru to sell these limited-edition models, more so if you bear in mind the sales for October 2018 totaled 101 cars.
