2019 SEAT Tarraco Shows Off Its Capability Off the Beaten Track

Looking at the success of the Kodiaq and Tiguan Allspace, Volkswagen Group-owned SEAT couldn’t sit around without a mid-size SUV in the lineup. This is where the Tarraco enters the scene, a sort of me-too of the crossover universe that promises to be a family hauler with off-road capability and all the latest technologies in the industry.

Regarding the off-road prowess, SEAT brings the point home by means of a teaser clip where a camouflaged prototype does its best to impress the viewer. Driven by an engineer at the Spanish automaker’s technical center, the Tarraco comes with 4Drive all-wheel drive and six driving modes.

Downhill driving on slopes of up to 70 percent is also possible, and rollover assist is there to keep things in check if the going takes a turn for the worst. Even though the exterior and cabin are camouflaged to a great extent, it doesn’t take much to imagine what SEAT has in the pipeline.

Virtual cockpit will be available as an optional extra, along with the DSG dual-clutch transmission. The engine lineup should start with the 1.4 TSI, tuned to 125 PS. Sent to the front wheels, these ponies will be kept in check by a three-pedal setup with six forward gears.

The 2.0 TSI (180 PS) and 2.0 TDI (150 and 190 PS) are also likely, and given time, Cupra could work its magic on the Tarraco in a similar fashion to how the performance division did with the Ateca. The 2.0-liter BiTDI in the Kodiaq RS, pushing 240 PS, should get the go-ahead too.

An adaptive suspension system has also been confirmed, along with a trunk capacity of 760 liters when the third-row seats are folded flat into the floor. SEAT will take the veil off the Tarraco at an event in Tarragona on September 18th, and knowing the Volkswagen Group, the mid-size SUV will be built on the same assembly line as the Skoda Kodiaq (Kvasiny, Czech Republic).

Kvasiny is the place where the Ateca is also manufactured. The compact-sized model starts at €18,450 in Spain, whereas the Karoq comes in at €18,900. The Skoda Kodiaq costs €26,600 in Active specification, which means the Tarraco won’t steer off too far from this pricing point.
