2019 Porsche 911 (992) Spied Uncamouflaged, Looks Ready For World Debut

Scheduled to go official towards the end of the year, the 992 appears to be on the prowl from this set of spy photographs. This validation prototype is as close to the real deal as it gets, especially when compared to previous test mules of the new 911.

Before anything, let’s talk about the most important aspect brought forward by the 992. No, it’s not the retro-futuristic design of the rear end, but the mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology on offer. On the 48-volt front, the six-cylinder boxer engine will be assisted with no less than 20 horsepower from an integrated starter-generator system.

As for the plug-in hybrid Porsche 911 from the 992 generation, expect a range “in excess of 40 miles” (64 kilometers) and a launch date of around 2023.” What might be the heaviest 911 ever is also expected to use a 10.8-kWh battery.

Turning our attention back to the blue-painted prototype, this is either the Carrera or Carrera S based on little details of the exterior design. The red-painted brake calipers work in conjunction with steel rotors, but knowing Porsche, customers will be offered a carbon-ceramic system as an optional extra.

Zooming in on the photographs, you’ll notice the car comes with the PDK that outperforms just about every other dual-clutch transmission out there. Fret not, however, for the manual isn’t going anywhere as far as the 911 is concerned.

The full-width taillights at the rear? Yeah, those integrate OLED indicators if you were wondering. And in a way, the 992 does have a little bit of Mission E Concept and Taycan about it.

Entering its eighth generation, the 911 range will be topped by the Turbo S. Hearsay suggests the 3.8-liter engine could be upgraded to 630 horsepower, 50 up on the current model.

Based on an evolution of the MMB vehicle architecture, the 992 will also weigh a little less than the 991 thanks to a greater aluminum content. According to model line director August Achleitner, the new 911, too, will be the best 911 of all time.”
